Symptoms

What are the symptoms?

Some of the most common sciatica symptoms include lower back pain which extends to the hip and leg, sometimes all the way to the foot. Patients can also feel numbness, burning or tingling sensation in their leg or foot, as well as a terrible, shooting pain. In some of the worst cases, all of the previously-listed symptoms can be felt at the same time and tend to worsen when sitting or bending.

Causes

What causes sciatica?

The symptoms of sciatica usually occur suddenly, mostly among people between the ages of 30 and 50. It can happen after an injury, infection, or sacroiliitis, an inflammation of one or both of the sacroiliac joints. It is possible to get sciatica as a consequence of a herniated disc or degenerative spine arthritis. Spinal stenosis is also a possible cause, mostly among people over the age of 60. It happens due to natural wear and tear of the vertebrae which leads to a narrowing of the spinal canal, ultimately pressuring the roots of the sciatic nerve.  Sciatica can also be a common complaint during pregnancy especially during the third trimester.

To determine the right cause and receive the most adequate sciatica pain treatment, schedule a consultation and examination with one of Vitalis Physiotherapy specialists. We’ll ask you about the first symptoms and ask you to perform a few simple moves to determine the root cause of your sciatica and design a program to get you back to doing the things you love.

Causes

Can scoliosis cause sciatica?

Although patients who are diagnosed with scoliosis tend to develop sciatica-like pain in the leg, it has not been proved that scoliosis is a direct cause of sciatica in some people. Sciatica scoliosis treatment consists of a detailed diagnosis to determine the exact source of the pain and is accompanied by a set of carefully selected exercises to help treat the issue. Whether you are diagnosed with one or the other (or even both, since sciatica and scoliosis can co-occur) you will be advised to undergo acute sciatica treatment or scoliosis treatment.

Treatment

What is the best treatment for sciatica?

At Vitalis Physiotherapy, the first step is always the same – we conduct a detailed assessment of your physical state to determine where the pain originated. This may involve performing a few movements around the office, and we might even request an MRI scan for a more comprehensive overview of your spine.

Based on the detailed analysis, we evaluate possible sciatica treatment options and propose the one we deem will be most efficient for you.
