About the condition

What is Sesamoiditis?

Sesamoiditis is a chronic condition, caused by continual pressure on the sesamoid bones and results in irritation and inflammation of the tendon, in which they are embedded. The big toe is the most commonly affected as it contains the tibial and fibular sesamoids. Sesamoid bones are vital for the relief of tension in the muscles and tendons in the foot. This allows for increased weight-bearing by distributing the stress and protecting the tendon from injury.
