About the condition

What is hip bursitis?

Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa.

A bursa is a small fluid filled pad or sac found near joints.  It acts like a cushion to reduce friction, allowing muscles and tendons to move smoothly over the bones or other structures.

Around the hip the most common bursitis is of the trochanteric bursa, which is located over the great trochanter of the thigh bone. The widest part of your hips where the bone is most prominent.

Causes

What causes hip bursitis?

One or more issues may cause hip bursitis. Women more often the men suffer from hip bursitis, possible due to the difference in the shape of the pelvis.

Bursitis can happen as a result of a fall onto the hip, bumping the hip or evening laying on the one side for prolonged periods. It can also happen as a consequence of overuse such as doing more running or walking than you are use to.

Another cause of hip bursitis is a poor level of strength in the muscles around the hip in proportion to your body weight. Even having tight muscles may be a factor in some individuals.
